Carlos Ruiz Named NL Player Of The Week

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was named National League Player of the Week on Monday.

In six games last week, Ruiz paced the Major Leagues with a .500 batting average (11-for-22) and a .593 on-base percentage.

His seven RBI ranked first in the National League while his 20 total bases were tied for the League’s top mark. Ruiz also ranked second in the League with eight runs scored and a .909 slugging percentage, and his 11 hits were tied for second.

Ruiz helped propel the Phillies to a 6-5 win in Saturday’s second game of a three-game set at Arizona, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and playing a key role in the Phillies’ four-run rally in the eighth inning. Down 5-2, Ruiz hit a run-scoring single before scoring the go-ahead run on Ben Revere’s single.

The Lakewood Blueclaws Cap

Recently, my roommate Sean’s younger sister Megan was honored for her academic achievement at a Lakewood Blueclaws game, and with his parents being the wonderful people they are, got me a ticket to tag along, well aware of my love of baseball and the Phillies (with whom the Blueclaws are the A affiliate). Imagine my excitement when I realized it was a doubleheader against none other the Mets minor league affiliate the Savannah Sand Gnats. Even if it’s their minor league players, I always appreciate an opportunity to see my beloved Phillies get a win against the Mets, the team Sean and his family support. Sadly that wasn’t the outcome, with the Blueclaws losing both games by a combined score of 14-3.

But it isn’t an entirely unexpected result; the Blueclaws are dead last in the South Atlantic League Northern standings with a measly 6 wins, while the Sand Gnats…
